Kling, an AI-powered video generator that rivals OpenAI Sora, has expanded its access beyond China. Previously, it was only available to those with a Chinese phone number, but now anyone can sign up using an email and generate up to six 5-second videos daily for free.

What is Kling AI?

Kling is a cutting-edge AI video generator developed by Kuaishou, a Beijing-based company that competes with TikTok. Kling allows users to create videos up to 10 seconds long, with 30 frames per second, at 1080P resolution, and with a flexible aspect ratio.

The creators claim their AI model excels in understanding physics and accurately modeling complex motions.

For context, Sora requires eight NVIDIA A100 graphics processing units (GPUs) running for over three hours to produce a one-minute clip. Each NVIDIA A100 costs over $10,000.

How To Generate Videos

To get started with Kling AI, head over to this website and create an account. Once you’re in, click on the “AI Videos” tab.

Here’s an example:

Prompt: A Chinese man sitting at a table, eating noodles with chopsticks

In the settings section, you can adjust the creativity level, mode, length, and frame ratio.

Okay, at first glance, the quality is really good. The AI-generated video showed a man eating noodles, but the noodles didn’t move naturally, highlighting some struggles with temporal coherence.

I timed the video generation speed, and a 5-second example took 12 minutes to complete, which is relatively slow compared to other AI video generators I have tried.

Kling AI also supports generating video from an existing image. For instance, I uploaded an image of a car generated with Midjourney and asked Kling to animate it.

The result was impressive, with added smoke in the background and realistic reflections on the wet ground.

Each video generation uses 10 credits from the 66 free daily credits, meaning you can create up to six videos per day with a free account.

The subscription feature is still under development, so all users currently operate on free credits. These credits expire after 24 hours, and you can monitor your usage by clicking on the remaining credit icon.

Examples

Here are more examples of prompts and their resulting videos:

Prompt 1: Inside shot, close-up, a Chinese child is eating dumplings

The kid looks great and is super realistic. The details are amazing, especially in the kid’s face and the dumplings. But the model still suffers from spatial coherence. One of the dumplings looks whole, even though a piece was bitten off.

Prompt 2: extreme close-up with a shallow depth of field of a puddle in a street. reflecting a busy futuristic Tokyo city with bright neon signs, night, lens flare

The reflections in the puddle are spot on and really capture the vibe of a futuristic Tokyo. The neon signs look cool, but some of the text isn’t clear and doesn’t seem to be written in Japanese.

Prompt 3: A medieval sailboat sailing on the sea, foggy nights, bright moonlight, eerie atmosphere

I love how the waves react to the boat’s movement here. All the elements in the scene perfectly align with the prompt.

Prompt 6: A lion with eagle wings patrols its territory, wings fully spread and soft shadows accentuate the texture of hair and feathers.

This lion with eagle wings looks majestic, with detailed textures in both the hair and feathers. The shadow on the face and the ground adds depth and emphasizes the creature’s form, making it appear more realistic.

And oh, Kling is also working on a Video Editor feature, aiming to streamline the workflow for creating full-length feature films by allowing users to generate images, turn them into videos, and stitch these videos together on one platform.

Kling AI set of tools

China seems to be way ahead of the competition. I don’t know of any other platform that offers this set of creative tools in one place.

Let’s Talk About the Video Quality

Is it better than Sora? Based on my initial tests, it seems not quite. While Kling’s video quality is comparable to Runway’s Gen-3 Alpha or LumaLab’s Dream Machine, there are still some issues.

Also, Kuaishou marketed Kling to simulate real-world physical characteristics, creating videos that conform to physical laws, but some videos still appear unnatural.

Look at the example video below:

Prompt: Carefully pour the milk into the cup, the milk flow is smooth, and the cup is gradually filled with milky white

I don’t need to explain much about how wrong this video looks. Also, the public version currently generates only 5-second videos, which is a significant limitation compared to its reported 2-minute capability.

Overall, it’s exciting to see Kling now available to a global audience. I understand that they can’t give unlimited AI video generations to all users, but the six daily generation credits are more than enough to test out the tool.

There’s an incoming wave of demand from users globally, so go ahead and try it out while the servers can still handle it. I am curious what people think about this new AI tool. Feel free to share your thoughts and experiences with Kling in the comments below.
