Freepik released a new AI-powered image generator.
Freepik, one of the largest sources of graphic design assets like photos, vector images, illustrations, and PSD files, has just launched an AI image generator tool.
The company seems to be going all-in with AI, they even created a dedicated page for AI-generated images.
In this article, I will be exploring this new text-to-image AI tool that lets you generate high-quality images with text descriptions.
Let’s get started.
To start using Freepik’s AI image generator, go to their website and create a free account. Then navigate to the AI page and click on “AI image generator”.
The interface is straightforward and easy to use.
On the left side of the dashboard, you can adjust various settings:
The prompt field is where you describe the image you want to generate. You’ll see the list of all the generated images below the prompt field.
Here’s an example prompt:
Prompt: a fisherman sitting on a cloud, the background is flat blue, a surralist painting, in the style of Rene Magritte, Andrey Remnev, by Mariotto Albertinelli, by Dino Valls, by Clarence Holbrook Carter. hyper-detailed, Rene Magritte. detailed, chirico and rene magritte, by Rafal Olbinski
Four images are generated by default. Select one to either download it or edit it further.
Clicking edit will take you to the image editing dashboard.
Here are a few more examples in various styles:
Prompt: A panda wearing a suit
Prompt: The baby cow stands naturally and looks lovingly at the camera. Soft lighting presents a high-end natural color scheme, creating a bright and harmonious atmosphere. Wearing clothes, showcasing the style of a bubble mall, with a simple and interesting design.
A newer version of the generator with more features is available as well.
This version has more aspect ratio options and a prompt-sharing functionality. It also supports a more advanced feature called permutation prompt.
Permutation prompts are an advanced way to get even more out of a single prompt. By separating alternate options with the pipe symbol “|”, the AI will generate an image for every possible combination.
For example, if a user enters the prompt:
Prompt: A (woman|man) standing in a (park|beach)
The AI will generate a set of images covering all these possible permutations:
The “|” symbol can be used multiple times in the same prompt to include several different alternates.
So a prompt like “(oil painting|watercolor) of a (cat|dog) wearing (sunglasses|a top hat)” would instruct Freepik’s AI to generate 8 different permutations — an oil painting of a cat in sunglasses, a watercolor of a dog in a top hat, and so on for every possible combination.
You can download, save to a collection, or generate variations of the image by clicking on the “Reimagine this image” button.
The reimagine feature will take you to another editor below.
Freepik offers both free and premium subscriptions, each with its own set of features and limitations.
The free plan provides users with limited daily downloads, basic AI generation capabilities, and access to free content. In contrast, the premium plan offers unlimited downloads, unlimited AI generations, access to a vast library of premium content, and additional benefits such as ad-free browsing, priority support, and no attribution requirements.
Premium subscribers can choose between a 12-month plan at 9 EUR per month (billed annually at 108 EUR) or a monthly plan at 15 EUR per month.
The Premium plan also includes high-quality, exclusive, and editable assets, as well as access to Flaticon, which provides over 13.6 million icons and stickers in various formats compatible with professional tools.
The question now is whether you are allowed to sell or redistribute the images you generate with Freepik’s AI image generator.
The updated terms (as of April 2024) do not explicitly state whether the images can be sold commercially or not. It says images can be used for any legal purpose in compliance with the terms. However, Freepik reserves the right to restrict certain uses like limiting images to personal or editorial use only.
Check the AI product terms page for more details. Freepik will likely continue updating these terms as AI technology and its implications evolve. It’s wise for users to stay informed on what is permitted as they use these AI tools, especially for commercial projects.
As a digital artist, Freepik has been one of my go-to platforms for high-quality assets like vector and PSD files. It’s a bold but wise decision for them to integrate AI into the platform.
There are risks involved in using AI in a digital asset platform like concerns related to the quality, uniqueness, and legal implications of AI-generated images.
Freepik seems to be approaching this in a thoughtful way by allowing users to filter out AI images in search results.
This is very important as many artists or even regular users do not like seeing mediocre AI-generated templates or images.
Nevertheless, Freepik seems to be handling it well and I only wish the company the best moving forward.
